In 2020, the Catalan Federation of Children’s Choirs commissioned Elisenda Carrasco to create a 3-year masterclass series for young conductors. The initiative was a success, and in 2022 the Barcelona-based Association of Adult Choirs joined the ranks of organisers. This gave young conducting candidates the opportunity to choose whether they wanted to conduct a children’s or adult choir.

The organisers thought that they would like to raise the standard of the courses even higher by 2023, so they asked Dénes Szabó, Kossuth and Liszt Prize-winning conductor and Artist of the Nation, to participate in the course as an instructor, and the Cantemus Children’s Choir to perform as a demonstration choir.

During the course, the members of the choir will have the opportunity to get to know the members of the Sant Cugat Children’s Choir, founded in 1991 and the host of the event, which has received numerous international awards. Experience shows that lasting friendships are formed at such events.

During the course, participants will have the opportunity to learn about Hungarian choral traditions and the Kodály method through Dénes Szabó. They will gain an insight into why Zoltán Kodály’s legacy is unique, and how his work and that of his fellow choirs, followers and students is of outstanding importance in the preservation and promotion of Hungarian folk music. They can learn how today’s people can benefit from the centuries-old cultural traditions of their ancestors and how classical values can be preserved.
