On the death of his great idol, Gioachino Rossini, in 1868, Verdi had the altruistic idea of having the famous Italian composers of his time perform a joint funeral mass in memory of the musician, with each movement written by a different composer – and without remuneration.
The plan eventually failed, but Verdi had by then written the movement Libera me, which could then serve as the basis for his own – later completed – mourning mass. And what could have been more natural than for Verdi to remain an opera composer when he wrote his Requiem: he had transformed his large-scale work into a personal, human drama. At the same time, he strove for a directly engaging expression, resulting in the uncharacteristically operatic melodic world that contributed so much to the work’s immediate – and still enduring – success.
