Symphony No. 3 (‘Kaddish’)
It was eighty years ago that the Holocaust, the greatest tragedy in the history of the 20th century, reached its terrible peak. To this day, we remain puzzled and often dumbfounded as to how such a thing could have taken place in an enlightened Europe. But the Jewish tradition is not silent: the Kaddish funeral hymn has accompanied the period of mourning for thousands of years and, despite the loss, upliftingly entrusts the dead to God’s benevolence. And art has not remained silent either, as several composers have crafted musical treatments of this text. At this concert, we shall remember, mourn and console ourselves with such works.
